Audio playback and USB Mic problems in Captivate 4

Many people are reporting problems with Captivate 4 and Audio playback and recording. Adobe posted a fix on their blog and apparantly it does help some people.

I posted the solution below so if you have these problems try it out and see if it works for you.

We found that in some of Vista machines with Real tek or Sigma tel sound card audio inside captivate doesn’t play back. Some customers who use USB mic for recording narration also observed that device is not getting detected by Captivate. These issues were reported more on Vista and we have one solution to address both the problems. – replacing the audio dll’s , Steps

Close Captivate 4 if it is open.
Download the file kept at
https://share.acrobat.com/adc/document.do?docid=a14e1bd9-dc10-4456-9cd2-44489809b78e
Go to your Captivate 4 install folder (ex: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Cativate 4)
Rename nsaudio.dll as nsaudio.dll.bak or anything which doesn’t have a dll extension
Copy the file from step 2 to Captivate 4 install folder
rename it as nsaudio.dll
Start Captivate 4
Try to play the audio /use USB – it should go fine

In case you can’t download the file from the above mentioned location I put up an alternative download link here (right-click to save file): http://www.cpguru.com/demonstrations/NSAudio_modified.adobe

Use Google Maps in your Adobe Captivate projects

Rajeev Kumar wrote a great article on his blog on how to use Google Maps in your Adobe Captivate projects. You will need Adobe Flash in order to make this work.

Take a look at Rajeevs blog here:  http://rajntechnlife.wordpress.com/2009/03/07/use-google-maps-in-your-adobe-captivate-projects/

Pause widget for Adobe Captivate 4

A user on the Adobe Captivate forums asked the following question:

When you don’t have any buttons on the screen, the movie advances from one slide to the other till the end.

However, I usually want the movie to pause at the end of each slide. Instead of placing (and configuring) a pause button on each slide, is there a feature available to globally configure such a pause action, e.g. a Widget that is displayed for rest of project?

I thought it was a good idea so I made a small widget that does exactly that. This widget pauses each slides 45 frames before it ends. The 45 frames is equivalent to 1.5 second before the slide timeline ends when you use the default 30 fps publishing settings in Adobe Captivate.

pausewidget1

If you use the Adobe Captivate playbars then you can just insert this widget on your first page and set it to “display for rest of project” and all your slides will automatically be paused and await user interaction with the navigation buttons in the playbar.

Download the widget below – the widget uses AS2 and Flash Player 9.

Shared Object Bookmark for Adobe Captivate

Well I’m finally done with this component. It took a bit longer than expected due to computer problems and the launch of Adobe Captivate 4.

I tested the component with Adobe Captivate 2, 3 and 4. It works in all of these editions although there is a slight issue with Adobe Captivate 4. If you use this component then you need to embed it into the Adobe Captivate swf , which is the standard setting in Adobe Captivate 4 anyways. You cannot change the publishing settings and externalize the swf animations because then the bookmark function won’t work. I will dig deeper into this issue and hopefully I can solve it quickly.

The component uses Actionscript 2.0 so in Adobe Captivate 4 you can only use it with AS2 projects. I will look into an AS3 version of this component soon.

Well what does this component do?

It allows you to insert an animation into Adobe Captivate which keeps track of the users progress in your course/presentation and stores it in a shared object on the users computer. If a user exits your project before having viewed all of it then it will store the pagenumber and remember this the next time the users launces your project. The user will then be given a choice on whether to continue from where they left off or start over again.

This process is similar to what we normally do in LMS when we deploy Adobe Captivate content although the progress status is stored in the LMS database instead of on the users computer.

You can see a demonstration of it here. The demonstration consists of 5 slides. Each slide is displayed for 4 seconds. The first slide contains the bookmark swf, which is set to display for rest of project. Once you launch the demonstration it stores some data on your PC and records your progress. If you exit the demonstration before the last page and then return you will be asked if you want to continue or not. The last page of the demonstration resets the bookmark to zero again.

Notice: I will do my best to fix the issue with Adobe Captivate 4 and the problem with the bookmark not working when publishing with externalized resources. If and when I fix it the people who has bought this version will receive the new version free of charge.

I also plan on releasing a more complex bookmark function later, which will allow you to change the graphics for the box background and also customize the text in the bookmark box. I expect to make this as a Adobe Captivate 4 widget.

New resource site for graphics

I am a big fan of Flashden.net, which allows me to purchase stock flash items to use in my projects for very little money. The guys and girls behind Flashden.net – Envato – just launced a new Stock site with graphics.

The site is called Graphic River and is a stock site containing layered Photoshop files, Vector graphics, Icons and much more.

I just looked through the various categories today and it looks like it will be very interesting in the near future. Right now they are starting up so they don’t have such a wide portfolio yet but the things they have look pretty good. One of the really great things is that you actually get the layered Photoshop files. That makes the images easy to customize and use in your own projects.

Adobe Captivate 4 – 1 month evaluation.

I have been using Adobe Captivate 4 on a more or less daily basis since it’s release on January 20th.

One of the things I really love with Adobe Captivate 4 is the speed. In Adobe Captivate 2 & 4 you often had to wait several seconds after clicking on an action until something happened.  Now with Adobe Captivate 4 everything goes quickly and smoothly and that is really something you can feel when you work with Adobe Captivate all day.

The second thing I really like with Captivate is the ability to included external flash animations into the Adobe Captivate SWF file when publishing.  It works really well and eliminates a lot of the problems you could encounter with Adobe Captivate 3 and external content. Complex Flash animations/components still need to be published seperatly on some occasions, but in my experience approximatly 90% of all the external resources I used can easily be integrated into the Adobe Captivate swf when publishing.

The third thing which I find extremely useful is the reviewing feature. It’s brilliant when you are working on project with multiple stakeholders it’s very useful and userfriendly to send the project for review like this. The only downside is that the reviewer application is a separate program that need to be installed on the users computer. If you work with big companies or cooperations chances are that most of the users don’t have admin priviliges and therefore need to involve their IT-department in order to install the application.

Now to the downsides of Adobe Captivate 4.

The audio part of Adobe Captivate 4 is terrible. I have a course produced in Adobe Captivate 3, which contains a lot of speak in the form of MP3 files. When I converted it to Adobe Captivate 4 the sound quality had gone down significantly. I tried to create a new Adobe Captivate 4 project and import the source MP3 files into the project again, but the sound quality is still poor. From what I gather Adobe Captivate 4 uses some form of compression on the imported MP3 files, which compromises the quality. This is a serious issue with Adobe Captivate 4 and if you look at the Adobe forums you can see that a lot of users have the same problem.

For courses which contain audio I’m still using Adobe Captivate 3 and will not be able to use Adobe Captivate 4 until Adobe has fixed this problem.

I urge you to report this problem to Adobe by clicking http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform&product=5

The TOC (Table of Contents) finally got usefull in Adobe Captivate 4. Unfortunately there are some issues with the TOC feature, which reduces the usability. I really like the fact that the user gets a check mark once they have completed a page. However these checkmarks apparantly only appear when a user has watched the entire timeline of that particular slide. I usually construct my courses with my own navigation buttons and these buttons pause before the timeline ends and when clicked they perfom a “go to next page” action. If you use buttons like this (or have any form of branching in your course) then you will never get the check mark in the TOC for those pages.

It’s really too bad because it’ s a great feature – especially for people who doesn’t use an LMS to deliver their Adobe Captivate content.

Some other issues with the TOC feature is the lack of customizability of the TOC and the fact that you need to use the default >> button to open/close it. It would be nice to be able to customize the TOC 100% and then open/close it with a script from your own button in the course.

All in all I’m pleased with Adobe Captivate 4 but I must admit the main thing leading to this is how it’s much much quicker than Adobe Captivate 3.

I still haven’t explored all the features with user defined variables and customized widgets yet, but I’ll start on that soon.

Youtube widget for Adobe Captivate 4

Just found this post on the Adobe Captivate blog. It shows how you can make a youtube widget and show youtube videos directly in your Captivate projects just be adding the url to the widget parameters. Pretty neat stuff and it’s the first widget I have seen public since Adobe Captivate 4 was launched.

You can find instructions, download the sourcefiles and the finished widget from the link below.

Have fun!

It’s finally here… Adobe Captivate 4 has been released and it’s looking very interesting indeed!

You can buy it here:

Another interesting package is the Elearning suite, which gives you Flash, Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc. with special E-learning functions included.  I’m just sad I just bought the CS4 Web Premium package 1 month ago, because now I probably need to upgrade once again.
