AS2 Email Widget for Adobe Captivate 4

This widget was created based on a request in the Adobe Forum – http://forums.adobe.com/thread/535691?tstart=0

emailWidgetThumb

This widget will allow you to send an email in the background to a predefined address. It will send an email once the widget is “played” on the Captivate timeline.

It will send an email with the subject “Mail sent from Captivate e-mail Widget” and it will send you the users name. (of course the user needs to enter his name in Captivate).

It relies on the widely available CGI / Perl script FormMail (www.formmail.com). This is a free open source script that is pre-installed on many webhosts.

If you don’t have this installed on your webserver you can install it yourself by following the instructions located here: http://www.scriptarchive.com/formmail.html

The widget has two paramenters that needs to be set.

  1. THe recipient email address. The default settings in the FormMail script dictates that this must be an email on the same domain as from the the script is exectuted. In other words – if I use the widget in an Adobe Captivate project located on my domain www.cpguru.com it can only send emails to xxx@cpguru.com.This functionality can be changed in the FormMail settings if needed so you can define more allowed domains to send email to.
  2. The location of the FormMail script on your webserver. The location is usually something like http://www.domain.com/cgi-bin/FormMail.pl but that depends on how and where your Webhost installed it (if it’s preinstalled) or where you installed it yourself. Also keep in mind that cpguru.com and www.cpguru.com are technically two separate domains so make sure you have the correct path for your own domain.

emailWidgetParameters

How to use the Email Widget for Adobe Captivate:

First of all ensure that you have FormMail installed on your Webserver and that it is working.

The only requirements that the widget have is the two parameters mentioned above and a variable called v_email that needs to be set in Captivate.

Process in Captivate:

  1. Create a user defined variable called v_email
  2. Create a Text Entry Box and associate the v_email variable with that.
  3. Insert the widget in Captivate anywhere after the Text Entry Box.
  4. Define the two parameters in the Widget Parameters Tab
  5. That’s it.

Now you will receive an email everytime someone accesses your Captivate course. The email will contain the following information:

In case you do not recieve an email then chances are that the error is with the FormMail script (or the link to the location of the script). I cannot provide support on anything FormMail related so I recommend that you look at http://www.scriptarchive.com/formmail.html where everything in regards to the FormMail script is described in detail.

The download package also contains a sample Captivate project. The FormMail script is not supplied due to license restrictions, but you can download it yourself for free on http://www.formmail.com/

Please note – the widget is supplied as is. The widget worked flawlessly in all my tests, but this is no guarantee that it will work for you.

AS2 Loader Widget for Adobe Captivate 4

I have recently had quite a lot of issues with Captivate 4 SWFs imported into other Captivate 4 SWFs. In a lot of cases it seems like the imported animations start playing even though they could be on slide 10 of the “master project”. When you launch the “Master project” you could also hear a lot of weird clicking going on making the whole project unstable.

I have tried everything possible to fix these projects-gone-bad but it seems like there is no solution once it’s screwed up. I even used the general lifesaver of copying all slides from my project to a blank project in order to remove any weird behaviour stuck behind the scenes, but that didn’t work either.

Due to this I have now created this Loader Widget for Adobe Captivate 4. Basically you insert the widget on a slide and you define the filename that it should load in the widget parameters. The advantage of using this Loader Widget is that loaded animations are separated from the main Captivate SWF by the Flash loader layer. Another benefit is that your animation will not be loaded until the user opens the actual slide, which means that you wont get any occurences of fully played animations when you reach slide 10 of your project. Finally if you need to change anything in the external animation there is no need to open the Master project again – just update the external file and that’s it.

AS3 DomainLock Widget for Adobe Captivate 4

I have created an AS3 version of the DomainLock Widget for Adobe Captivate 4. This widget will allow you to lock your Captivate content to only play on the domain(s) that you authorize.

widgetAS3Parameters

Requirements

The component uses ActionScript 3.0 and requires at least Flash Player 9 to work. Adobe Captivate 4 is also required.

Demonstration

Example of an Adobe Captivate project playing from an authorized domain:

http://www.cpguru.com/demonstrations/domainLockWidget(domainNotOk)/domainLockWidget(domainNotOk).htm

The example above on the unauthorized domain is set to accept “localhost” as the domain so if you were to download this movie it would play on your computer locally, but not on any other domain or intranet.

Answer: Yes that is perfectly normal. In Edit view in Adobe Captivate all you get is a blank box. However, once you publish your project it will work just fine.

Question: What’s all this license stuff. I just want to use it in my projects?
Answer: The license stuff is actually pretty simple. Persistent username for Adobe Captivate

This component (actually it’s two) will allow you to take a username from one chapter / module and then use it in any subsequent chapters / modules created in Adobe Captivate.

persistentusernamecaptivatethumb

This is useful if you want to use the students name throughout your course / presentation without having the user enter the data more than once.

How does it work:

In the first chapter / module the Username is entered in a text entry box and stored in a user defined variable called v_Name. After the text entry box
you need to insert a special Flash animation, which will save this variable to a Local Shared Object on the users computer.

In any subsequent chapters / modules you insert another special Flash animation on the first page, which will retrieve the stored value from the LSO and populate the user defined variable v_Name in Captivate again.

After this you can use the $$v_Name$$ in text boxes to make your course personal and display the users name or you can use the stock certificate widget,
which will automatically fetch the users name.

Bookmark Widget for Adobe Captivate

The Bookmark / Resume Widget for Adobe Captivate allows a user to return to your course at their last exit point. It keeps track of this by using a Local Shared Object on the users PC.

captivatebookmarkthumbexchange1

If you are looking for the AS3 version of the component please click here.

Package contents:

The package contains three (3) separate componets.

One component for Adobe Captivate 2 & Adobe Captivate 3 projects. This component will only work for projects published as SWF. There is no support for EXE publishing.

One component for Adobe Captivate 4. This component will work for projects published as SWF and EXE.

One advanced component for Adobe Captivate 4. This component allows you to pass a variable from Captivate 4 through a standard text entry box. This will allow you to keep multiple bookmarks for individual users on a shared PC.

How does it work?

The Bookmark Component is an animation that you insert into Adobe Captivate which then keeps track of the users progress in your course/presentation and stores it in a shared object on the users computer. If a user exits your project before having viewed all of it then it will store the pagenumber and remember this the next time the users launces your project. The user will then be given a choice on whether to continue from where they left off or start over again. Once a user has viewed your course/project to the end it will automatically reset the bookmark.

This process is similar to what we normally do in LMS when we deploy Adobe Captivate content although the progress status is stored in the LMS database instead of on the users computer.

Requirements / Specifications:

The component works with Adobe Captivate 2, Adobe Captivate 3 and Adobe Captivate 4. It is built using ActionScript 2 so if you use it in Captivate 4 it needs to be an AS2 project. For Adobe Captivate 4 projects the component needs to be embedded into the project (this is the standard setting) – It will not work if you choose to “Externalize Animations”.

The component requires Flash Player 8 on the users computer as a minimum. Component has been tested with IE6, IE7, IE8, Firefox 2 & Firefox 3.

Demonstration

You can see a demonstration of it here. The demonstration consists of 5 slides. Each slide is displayed for 4 seconds. The first slide contains the bookmark swf, which is set to display for rest of project. Once you launch the demonstration it stores some data on your PC and records your progress. If you exit the demonstration before the last page and then return you will be asked if you want to continue or not. The last page of the demonstration resets the bookmark to zero again.

Progress bar for Adobe Captivate

The Progress Bar for Adobe Captivate is an easy and simple way to illustrate a users progression in your project or course.

The component works with Adobe Captivate 3 and Adobe Captivate 4. It’s coded with ActionScript 2.0 so you cannot use this with Adobe Captivate 4 and AS3 projects.

What does it do?
The progress bar is a flash based component which you can load into your Adobe Captivate projects to show the user his/her current progress in the course/project. It is fully automatic and gives your users/learners a great indication of when the chapter/course they are doing is finished.

How does it work?
The progress bar works by using the Adobe Captivate system variables and retrieving data for current slide and total number of slides. The progress is illustrated graphically with a bar.

What can be customized?
The progress bar component can be customized in an external XML file. That means you don’t need Adobe Flash in order to edit it or for example change the colors. You also get the source fla file so if you have Adobe Flash and knowledge on how to use this program you can change every aspect of the file.

The progress bar works for projects with and without skins and borders but you need to define whether your project has a skin or not in the XML file.

In the XML file you can define the following things:

- Starting coordinates of the Progress bar
- Length of the Progress bar
- Thickness of the Progress bar
- Stroke color
- Progress bar color
- Whether or not you want the Progress bar to drop a shadow
- Starting coordinates for the two textboxes
- Font for the text
- Font size
- Font color
- Whether or not your Captivate project uses the Captivate skin/playback control

Two different Progress Bars are included. One is zero based and the other is not. You can see the difference in the preview above.

All actionscript in the flash files are commented in case you want to edit/change something. An exhaustive Help file is also included, which explains the XML parameters in detail as well as gives answers to the most common questions/problems.

The Progress Bar works in standalone projects published on the web or your company intranet as well in LMS environments.

Pause Widget for Adobe Captivate 4

A user on the Adobe Captivate forums asked the following question:

When you don’t have any buttons on the screen, the movie advances from one slide to the other till the end.

However, I usually want the movie to pause at the end of each slide. Instead of placing (and configuring) a pause button on each slide, is there a feature available to globally configure such a pause action, e.g. a Widget that is displayed for rest of project?

I thought it was a good idea so I made a small widget that does exactly that. This widget pauses each slides 45 frames before it ends. The 45 frames is equivalent to 1.5 second before the slide timeline ends when you use the default 30 fps publishing settings in Captivate.

If you use the Adobe Captivate playbars then you can just insert this widget on your first page and set it to “display for rest of project” and all your slides will automatically be paused and await user interaction with the navigation buttons in the playbar.

Download the widget below – the widget uses AS2 and Flash Player 9.
