I have now finished porting the Bookmark / Resume widget to Adobe Captivate 5. In reality I didn’t have to change much from the AS3 version of the Widget for Adobe Captivate 4, but I decided to take advantage of the new Widget API in Adobe Captivate 5.

There are some great features in the new API that allow you to track events much more efficiently than with the API for Adobe Captivate 4.The AS3 Widget for Adobe Captivate 5 will therefore not use as many resources as the Captivate 4 widget.

Special offer:

Everyone that have purchased the original AS3 Bookmark / Resume Widget for Adobe Captivate 4 previously will recieve a free upgrade. You should have recieved an email with information and a download link.

Everyone that have purchased the original AS2 Bookmark / Resume Widget for Adobe Captivate 3 & 4 previously will recieve a 50% discount on the new Bookmark / Resume Widget for Adobe Captivate 5. You should have recieved an email with information about how to get the discount. The 50% discount will be valid for the next 30 days.

Everyone else will recieve a 20% discount on the widget for the remaining part of July since I had a great day today.

What will the Bookmark Widget for Adobe Captivate 5 do:

The Bookmark / Resume Widget for Adobe Captivate 5 allows a user to return to your course from where they left off the last time. It keeps track of this by using a Local Shared Object on the users PC. It will work for projects published to SWF or EXE. It will work for projects run locally on a machine or projects delivered online through regular webpages, intranet and LMS’.

When a user returns to your course / project they will be prompted and asked if they want to resume or not. The bookmark will automatically be reset once a user reaches the last slide of your project.

Demonstration:

Click here to see a demonstration of the Bookmark / Resume Widget in action.

Limitations:

Please note that you should not use this component in Captivate files that contain quiz questions in the middle of your project. While it would be possible to store a users answers to questions it is not possible to inject these back into Captivate. Therefore if you have a project with quiz questions the bookmark component will only remember the location of their last visit – not if they answered any questions. Resuming a project past a bunch of questions will set them as skipped in Captivate and will almost certainly result in the user failing your quiz. The bookmark component is only suitable for project that contain regular content or non-scorable objects.

Requirements:

The Bookmark / Resume Widget for Adobe Captivate 5 requires Captivate 5 and that you publish to Flash Player 9.0

Package contents:

The download package contains two (2) Widgets.

One Widget for Adobe Captivate 5. This Widget will work for projects published as SWF and EXE.

One Widget for Adobe Captivate 4. This Widget will work for projects published as SWF and EXE.

The download package also contains a help document.

If you purchase the Multiple User License or the Enterprise License any design modifications are free.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Question: When I insert the component in Adobe Captivate all I get is a blank box. Is that normal?
Answer: Yes that is perfectly normal. In Edit view in Adobe Captivate all you get is a blank box. However, once you publish your project it will work just fine.

Question: What’s all this license stuff. I just want to use it in my projects?
Answer: The license stuff is actually pretty simple. If you want to use this component in your projects (personal or professionally) then in 90% of the cases you just need to buy the Single User License. This license can be used by you in any number of projects for any number of users. The projects can be personal or for the company where you work. However, the projects need to be used internally in the company where you work. You cannot add this component to a course / project that you intend to resale to an external client. In that case you would need to re-purchase the Single User License again per external project.

The Multiple User License is just like above, but here all your developers in your company can use it. What if you are only 3 developers? Well then just buy 3 x Single User Licenses. If you are more than 5 people that needs to use it then the Multiple User License is cheaper for you.

The Enterprise License gives you the right to use the component in all your courses – internal or external, resale or giveaways you name it. I can even modify the component with your own Corporate ID & Brand if you want that.

Question: We have a shared computer but people login to the computer/domain with their own user details. Will the bookmark be stored for each user?
Answer: Yes if your users logon to a computer with a unique sign-on then the bookmark will be stored for each user individually.

Question: Are we able to change the text in the component ourselves?
Answer: No not at this time. However, I offer a free customization service for text alterations. If you purchase the component just send me a mail afterwards with the new text you want to have added.

Question: I really would like to change the design of the component so it has my company logo and corporate identity. Is it possible to change that?
Answer: Yes it’s possible. I charge a fee of US$15 to do the design modifications for you. I need the relevant graphics as well as a mock-up of how you would like the final result to look like.

Question: Can I use this component together with the TOC in Adobe Captivate 5?
Answer: Yes as long as you disable the “Self Paced Learning” option in the TOC settings then it will work just fine.

Question: Can I use this component in a course delivered through an LMS?
Answer: Yes that is no problem at all. However, if you published the SCORM package directly from Captivate then you need to be sure that “Never send resume data” is deselected first in the Reporting settings.

Question: What if I buy it and it doesn’t work. Can I get a refund?
Answer: No if you purchase the product you can’t get a refund. The component has been tested extensively on all types of systems, browsers etc. without any issues. However, I can provide you with a test version of the bookmark component if you are worried about it not working. Send me an email and I will send you a demo version of the component back by email.

Actually it has been downloaded more than 4.000 times from my site so far so I decided to update it so it will work with Adobe Captivate 5.

In reality it is not a widget but a Flash animation, but it will work just as well.

The download package contains the FLA files and two published SWF’s. Insert the SWF’s in your project as animations and set them to display for rest of project. Once the user hovers over the corners they will animate similar to what you see in Flash based magazines. Clicking on the corner will navigate to the next or previous slide respectively.

The demonstration below is from Adobe Captivate 4 but it will work just like this in Adobe Captivate 5 as well.

What does it do?:

The Email Reporting Widget for Adobe Captivate 4 will automatically send an email with quizzing, access and other information to an email-address that the developer specifies in the widget parameters. The Widget uses a PHP script to send the email in the background and the user will not notice or need to take any action in order to send the email.

How does it work?:

The developer inserts the Email Reporting Widget either on the quiz summary slide or on any slide after the quiz summmary slide. You could also use this widget to record access data and time spent in a project without quizzes. In that case simply insert the widget on your last Captivate slide.

The widget parameters tab contains three required fields:

The Recipient email field defines the email address where you want the Widget to send the email.

The Email subject field defines the subject of the email.

The Sender email field defines the from email address that will appear in the email you receive.

Once you have set up these parameters and inserted the widget then the final thing you need to do is to add a Text Entry Box in your Captivate project where the user can enter his name / employee number or other type of ID so you can identify the user. The Text Entry Box needs to be associated with a variable called v_email.

This concludes the work you need to do in Adobe Captivate. The next step is to publish your project and then manually copy the sendmail.php file to the directory where you published your files to. Upload all files to your webserver / LMS that runs PHP and you are all set.

Demonstration:

Since the widget sends email I cannot provide a live demonstration. However here you can see the output recieved by email after the widget is inserted in a project.

Requirements:

Adobe Captivate 4, minimum Flash Player 8 and PHP installed on your server. Your Adobe Captivate project needs to be published to AS2.

Test package to verify the widget will work for you:

In order to make sure that this widget will work on your system / setup you can download a special test package here. This package contains a Captivate project, some Flash coding and a PHP file. All you need to do is to edit the PHP file and insert your own email address and then upload all the files to the server / LMS where you intend to run your Captivate project from.

Download the test package (194)

Limitations:

As far as I am aware of there are no know limitations of this widget other than the fact that you server needs to run PHP. Most webhosts already have PHP running on the server.

In addition to this – prior to buying the widget you should have (hopefully) used the test package to see if your server would send you an email.

Package contents:

One Adobe Captivate 4 Widget, two PHP files and help document.

Buy the Widget:

Frequently asked questions:

Question: When I insert the component in Adobe Captivate all I see is a blank box. Is that normal?
Answer: Yes that is perfectly normal. In Edit view in Adobe Captivate all you get is a blank box. It will also be blank when the user runs your project since the widget only affects things in the background.

Question: What’s all this license stuff?

Question: Can I use this component together with the TOC in Adobe Captivate 4?
Answer: Yes that is no problem

Question: Can I use this widget in projects that are using the Aggregator.
Answer: Yes that is no problem but the widget will not be able to aggregate scores from multiple quizzes if they are published in separate SWF files.

Question: Can I use this component in a course delivered through an LMS?
Answer: Yes provided that your LMS runs from a PHP enabled server.

Question: I cannot see the Widget Parameters tab when I have inserted the widget in Captivate.
Answer: Chances are that you imported it as an “Animation” by mistake. Try and import the widget again as a widget.

Question: What if I buy it and it doesn’t work. Can I get a refund?
Answer: No if you purchase the product you can’t get a refund since it’s a digital delivery. The component has been tested extensively on all types of systems, browsers etc. without any issues. If you are unsure if the component will work for you or not then use the Test Package provided for download further up in this post to make sure first.

Question: Can you help me install PHP on my server?
Answer: No unfortunately not. There are people way cleverer than me that can do this for you.

Question: I would like to have some modifications done to the widget – is that possible?
Answer: Sure thing – just send me an email through my sites www.cpguru.com contact form and we can work out the details.

One of the things that have irritated me about the printwidget available in Adobe Captivate 4 and also some of the other print widgets out there is that it always prints in portrait mode. This means that the end-user needs to actively select landscape mode to print out slides from a Captivate movie in order for it to fit properly.

Based on a couple of the posts on the official Adobe Captivate Forum I decided to develop my own print widget.

What does it do?

This print widget will print any slide from Adobe Captivate 4. It will also always force the print to landscape mode without the user having to select it in the print dialog. Another clever thing is that it will automatically rescale the printed slide so it will fit on the paper selected in the print dialog box. The rescaling is done dynamically and will adjust to whatever papersize the user selects (or the default size if the user justs clicks ok) in the print dialog prompt.

The widget is “plug & play” – no need to define any parameters or set up anything. The widget will do it all automatically. Simply add the widget to the slide or slides that you want to allow the user to print and that’s it.

Requirements:

Adobe Captivate 4 is required since this uses the Widget API. This widget is an AS2 widget so your project will need to be an AS2 project. I will develop an AS3 version soon.

Demonstration:

Click here to see a demonstration of the AS2 Intelligent Print Widget for Adobe Captivate. The demonstration is a 900px by 555px Captivate project and will open in a new window. You also have the possibility to try out the regular stock supplied print widget here to compare the results.

Buy the component (US$ 10):

Other information:

The widget has been tested with Internet Explorer 7 & 8 and Firefox 3.5 and works perfectly well. If you are unsure if your browser supports it then try the demonstration link above. If you can print from the demonstration then the widget will work on your system.

I have heard some rumours about problems with printing from Flash on Mac and on Safari browsers, but I do not have access to a Mac so I cannot verify this.

This widget was created based on a request in the Adobe Forum – http://forums.adobe.com/thread/535691?tstart=0

This widget will allow you to send an email in the background to a predefined address. It will send an email once the widget is “played” on the Captivate timeline.

It will send an email with the subject “Mail sent from Captivate e-mail Widget” and it will send you the users name. (of course the user needs to enter his name in Captivate).

It relies on the widely available CGI / Perl script FormMail (www.formmail.com). This is a free open source script that is pre-installed on many webhosts.

If you don’t have this installed on your webserver you can install it yourself by following the instructions located here: http://www.scriptarchive.com/formmail.html

The widget has two paramenters that needs to be set.

THe recipient email address. The default settings in the FormMail script dictates that this must be an email on the same domain as from the the script is exectuted. In other words – if I use the widget in an Adobe Captivate project located on my domain www.cpguru.com it can only send emails to xxx@cpguru.com.This functionality can be changed in the FormMail settings if needed so you can define more allowed domains to send email to.

The location of the FormMail script on your webserver. The location is usually something like http://www.domain.com/cgi-bin/FormMail.pl but that depends on how and where your Webhost installed it (if it’s preinstalled) or where you installed it yourself. Also keep in mind that cpguru.com and www.cpguru.com are technically two separate domains so make sure you have the correct path for your own domain.

How to use the Email Widget for Adobe Captivate:

First of all ensure that you have FormMail installed on your Webserver and that it is working.

The only requirements that the widget have is the two parameters mentioned above and a variable called v_email that needs to be set in Captivate.

Process in Captivate:

Create a user defined variable called v_email

Create a Text Entry Box and associate the v_email variable with that.

Insert the widget in Captivate anywhere after the Text Entry Box.

Define the two parameters in the Widget Parameters Tab

That’s it.

Now you will receive an email everytime someone accesses your Captivate course. The email will contain the following information:

Below is the result of your feedback form. It was submitted by

() on Friday, December 18, 2009 at 10:37:38

—————————————————————————

userID: Michael

—————————————————————————

In case you do not recieve an email then chances are that the error is with the FormMail script (or the link to the location of the script). I cannot provide support on anything FormMail related so I recommend that you look at http://www.scriptarchive.com/formmail.html where everything in regards to the FormMail script is described in detail.

Download the Email Widget:

Here is the link to download the widget.

AS2 E-mail Widget for Adobe Captivate (336)

The download package also contains a sample Captivate project. The FormMail script is not supplied due to license restrictions, but you can download it yourself for free on http://www.formmail.com/

Please note – the widget is supplied as is. The widget worked flawlessly in all my tests, but this is no guarantee that it will work for you.

I have recently had quite a lot of issues with Captivate 4 SWFs imported into other Captivate 4 SWFs. In a lot of cases it seems like the imported animations start playing even though they could be on slide 10 of the “master project”. When you launch the “Master project” you could also hear a lot of weird clicking going on making the whole project unstable.

I have tried everything possible to fix these projects-gone-bad but it seems like there is no solution once it’s screwed up. I even used the general lifesaver of copying all slides from my project to a blank project in order to remove any weird behaviour stuck behind the scenes, but that didn’t work either.

Due to this I have now created this Loader Widget for Adobe Captivate 4. Basically you insert the widget on a slide and you define the filename that it should load in the widget parameters. The advantage of using this Loader Widget is that loaded animations are separated from the main Captivate SWF by the Flash loader layer. Another benefit is that your animation will not be loaded until the user opens the actual slide, which means that you wont get any occurences of fully played animations when you reach slide 10 of your project. Finally if you need to change anything in the external animation there is no need to open the Master project again – just update the external file and that’s it.

I have created an AS3 version of the DomainLock Widget for Adobe Captivate 4. This widget will allow you to lock your Captivate content to only play on the domain(s) that you authorize.

In the AS3 version you have the option to authorize multiple domains to play your content. You can also define a custom stop message that will be displayed if the domain check fails.

Requirements

The component uses ActionScript 3.0 and requires at least Flash Player 9 to work. Adobe Captivate 4 is also required.

Demonstration

Example of an Adobe Captivate project playing from an authorized domain:
http://www.cpguru.com/demonstrations/domainLockWidget(domainOk)/domainLockWidget(domainOk).htm

Example of an Adobe Captivate project playing from an unauthorized domain:
http://www.cpguru.com/demonstrations/domainLockWidget(domainNotOk)/domainLockWidget(domainNotOk).htm

The example above on the unauthorized domain is set to accept “localhost” as the domain so if you were to download this movie it would play on your computer locally, but not on any other domain or intranet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Question: Are we able to change the text in the component ourselves?
Answer: Yes the stop message is fully customizable through the Widget parameters.

Question: When I insert the component in Adobe Captivate all I get is a blank box. Is that normal?
Answer: Yes that is perfectly normal. In Edit view in Adobe Captivate all you get is a blank box. However, once you publish your project it will work just fine.

Question: Can I use this component in a course delivered through an LMS?
Answer: Yes that is no problem at all.

Question: Can I use this component in a course delivered through our corporate intranet?
Answer: Yes as long as you have a domain name then it will be fine.

Question: I also bought the Bookmark component and want to use both of them in the same project. Is that possible?
Answer: Yes that is possible. Place the DomainLock widget on the timeline first and then the Bookmark Widget afterwards.

Question: I really would like to have this for Adobe Captivate 3. Is that possible?
Answer: This version uses AS3, which isn’t possible to use in Adobe Captivate 4. However, I can compile a special AS 2 version for Adobe Captivate 3 for you. This component would have the domain and the stop message hard coded so you would not be able to change it yourself. Send me an email with the details and I will make the component for you. Price is US$ 25.

Question: What happens if the project has a playbar?
Answer: The DomainLock Widget will disable the playbar while the domain check is in progress. If the domain is authorized the playbar will be enabled again.

Question: Can I use this widget in a project that has the TOC (Table of Contents) enabled?
Answer: Yes that is possible. Set the widget to display for rest of project then.

The Bookmark / Resume Widget for Adobe Captivate allows a user to return to your course at their last exit point. It keeps track of this by using a Local Shared Object on the users PC.

This version is the AS3 version of the component so you need to have Adobe Captivate 4 and publish to Flash Player 9 at the minimum.

If you are looking for the AS2 version of the component please click here.

Package contents:

The package contains one (1) component.

One component for Adobe Captivate 4. This component will work for projects published as SWF and EXE.

Requirements / Specifications:

The component requires Adobe Captivate 4 and at least Flash Player 9 on the users computer. Furthermore this is an AS3 version so you need to publish your project as AS3.

Buy the component

The widget have been updated and now also contains a version for Adobe Captivate 5. Please refer to this post for buying the widget.

Customizations:

If you buy the component I offer a free change of the text in the component. If you want to change the design to match your corporate ID I can do this for a US$ 15 fee.

Question: Can I use this component together with the TOC in Adobe Captivate 4?

Question: I also bought the DomainLock Widget and want to use both of them in the same project. Is that possible?
Answer: Yes that is possible. Place the DomainLock widget on the timeline first and then the Bookmark Widget afterwards.

This component (actually it’s two) will allow you to take a username from one chapter / module and then use it in any subsequent chapters / modules created in Adobe Captivate.

This is useful if you want to use the students name throughout your course / presentation without having the user enter the data more than once.

How does it work:

In the first chapter / module the Username is entered in a text entry box and stored in a user defined variable called v_Name. After the text entry box
you need to insert a special Flash animation, which will save this variable to a Local Shared Object on the users computer.

In any subsequent chapters / modules you insert another special Flash animation on the first page, which will retrieve the stored value from the LSO and populate the user defined variable v_Name in Captivate again.

After this you can use the $$v_Name$$ in text boxes to make your course personal and display the users name or you can use the stock certificate widget,
which will automatically fetch the users name.

The DomainLock Widget allows you to specify a domain from which your content can be run. All other domains will not be able to run your content.

The DomainLock Widget allows you to secure your Adobe Captivate content so it can only be played from a domain that you specify.

NB! This is the AS2 version. The AS3 version can be found here!

The component uses the Adobe Captivate 4 Widget API so you can define the authorized domain and the custom stop message directly in the Widget Parameters. It is extremely easy to use and will give you the option to make sure that no-one is downloading your content from your Intranet / Website / LMS.

Requirements

The component uses ActionScript 2.0 and requires at least Flash Player 7 to work. Adobe Captivate 4 is also required since the component uses the Widget API.

Demonstration

Example of an Adobe Captivate project playing from an authorized domain:
http://www.cpguru.com/demonstrations/domainLockWidget(domainOk)/domainLockWidget(domainOk).htm

Example of an Adobe Captivate project playing from an unauthorized domain:
http://www.cpguru.com/demonstrations/domainLockWidget(domainNotOk)/domainLockWidget(domainNotOk).htm

The example above on the unauthorized domain is set to accept “localhost” as the domain so if you were to download this movie it would play on your computer locally, but not on any other domain or intranet.
