The Glossary Widget for Adobe Captivate will allow you to add your own interactive Glossary to your projects and courses.
The Glossary Widget uses an XML file that contains your data, which makes it easy to reuse existing glossaries in multiple projects. You can add images and Flash animations in your glossary as well.
The Glossary Widget comes with two designs (a black and a grey) that are relatively neutral and should allow you to blend it in with your existing course design. Furthermore you have the ability to modify the text colors if you want to add your own corporate colors for example.
Demonstration:
Click the button below to see an online demonstration of an Adobe Captivate Project using several instances of the Glossary Widget in different colors and sizes.
Using the widget in your Adobe Captivate projects:
Using the widget in your projects is pretty simple. Insert the widget on any slide of your choosing and fill out the Widget Properties as you please. You can use the standard Adobe Captivate features like fade-in / fade-out, add shadows etc.
The widget – in its current form – is intended to be inserted on a slide in your project. You can then allow your students / users to navigate to this slide by adding a button on any of your other Captivate Slides that will perform a “Jump to Slide” to the slide where you have placed the widget.
On the slide with the Glossary Widget you would then add another Captivate button that will allow your students / users to jump back to the slide that they came from. This button needs to have a “Pause” function enabled so that the slide is paused when the glossary is viewed.
Size and scaling:
The Glossary Widget is 800 pixels wide and 550 pixels high. You can scale the widget up or down to some extent if the size does not fit your project and the widget will then scale the content as well. However, you might want to change the text size of the description text if you make the widget a lot smaller and this can be done by adding a HTML font tag to your descriptions in the XML file. This is described in the help documentation.
Widget Properties panel:
The Properties Panel for the Glossary Widget allows you to modify a number of things directly in the widget interface. You can change the name of the XML file, the location of the XML and any assets, change between the Black and the Grey Template, change the text colors etc.
The XML file:
All data that is shown in the Glossary Widget is contained in an external XML file. This allows you to reuse the same glossary in multiple courses with ease. It also allows you to have several different glossaries in one Adobe Captivate Project as you can create as many XML files as you please.
The basic XML file looks like this:
You can use basic HTML tags to format the text in the description node. Examples and instructions on how to do this are included in the help documentation.
The XML file can be edited in any XML editor of your choice or by using Notepad or similar.
The Editor:
For users that are not used to working with XML files or HTML tags I have included an online editor that will allow you to style your text in a more familiar manner. This allows you to copy/paste your text into the editor and apply the styles and formatting that you want for the description text. Once you are finished editing this you can copy/paste it back into the XML file.
The Editor is located here: https://www.cpguru.com/editor/
Help documentation and videos:
The full help documentation is available here as a PDF file. I recommend that you take a look at this before purchasing the widget.
Glossary Widget Help Documentation (1865 downloads)I have also recorded a couple of video demonstrations / tutorials on how to use the Glossary Widget, edit the XML file and using the Editor.
You can view the videos in HD if you go to the Vimeo website (just click the HD logo at the videos below here).
NOTE: The first two videos seem to have compiled incorrectly as the HD version is not available. I will update this as soon as possible.
Sorry about the noise from the microphone – sounds like there is a loose connection somewhere.

Michael, AWESOME widget. Just what I have been looking for. Went over very well at the Oregon Captivate User Group and I posted the link in our collaboration site also. Thanks so much.
Thanks Anita. I’m glad to hear that you like it ;o)

Hi Michael,
Nicely done! Over the years many people asked for this feature. It’s about time that someone did it.
Whyves
Greetings! I really like this widget and would like to purchase it and begin using it. Will the widget be compatible with Captivate 6 when it is released this summer?
Hi David,
Yes the widget will be updated to work with Adobe Captivate 6 once this is released. It will only work with SWF based output though – not with HTML5 output that Adobe Captivate 6 can publish to.

Nice job Michael. I really like the design. If you want to list every definition under the same heading you can also manipulate the XML file to create an “All” category. To separate the “All” from the rest of the alphabet you can even create a blank category between “Z” and “All” that is marked with a “-“.
Thanks Erick,
I tried to make the widget as flexible as possible so it would accomodate as many uses as possible.
The design is done by a graphic designer named Ed Brown. My intial design was okay but nothing fancy. Ed took it, threw it away and came up with this design.

One more clarification question if you don’t mind. I’m am unclear as to the format that is used when you export from Captivate 5.5 to Adobe Connect. I understand that it is not the SWF setting, but does it create a format that will work for the widget?
Thank you!
Hi David,
Yes the widget should work fine with content published to Adobe Connect. The only thing that may be a problem is that the widget probably needs a full URL to the XML file for the glossary. This is because Adobe Connect loads content in a “shell” that changes the path. If you have a static URL to the Glossary XML file and enter this in the widget properties it should work fine.
Sincerley,
Michael
Michael.
Awesome! Thanks. I look forward to trying this out!
Trying to use img tag and embed swf animation, but help file doesn’t show how and the example glossary doesn’t seem to work as is.
img tag doesn’t work unless src=”” is specified inside tag.
How to embed a swf animation? Does it have to be inside the dec & CDATA tags?
Does it use the embed tag – or img?
Thanks
My bad – it works perfectly (if spelling is correct!)
Hi,
We love the glossary widget. Is there any way to go direct from a word in captivate to the glossary page?
Hi Paul,
No unfortunately that is not possible. It is however a pretty good idea, so I’ll look into it. I’m not sure if it will be too complicated though, but it is an interesting use case.
Thanks Michael
I was wandering whether the new hyperlink in Cp7 could be used. I have posted in the advanced forum to find out whether you can pass variables to it?
Michael, I would like to download the test package for the Glossary widget but I don’t see a link. Where can I find it?
Thanks,
Hi Mike,
Unfortunately there is no trial download of this widget, but get in touch with me through the “Contact” section on my site and we can work something out.
Hi: I was wondering if this works with 8.01? The internal glossary learning interaction is not importing xml correctly-and I am very much in need of a solution. Thanks!
Hi Michael,
I was curious if this widget has been updated for Captivate 8. Also, how difficult is it to customize the look and feel of this widget? We have a client that wants a particular look for the interface in terms of banners, headers, subheaders, etc. Is this something we could work with you to design or something we would need to code on our own? Thanks Michael.
Hi Nick,
Sorry – I missed this comment.. The widget works with CP8 SWF based output. It is not HTML5 compatible. You can customize the look of the interface to a certain extent but it is really limited to colors of texts and interface elements. In case you want to try out a demo version, get in touch with me through the contact section.
Sincerely,
Michael
Hi Michael,
I like just about everything this widget has to offer. I’m having a problem with the images though. They look really pixelated and just bad when I preview and publish. I’ve tried changing the publish and slide settings in Captivate, and even creating my own images. Everything still looks bad. I’m using Captivate 8. Is there something I can do to fix this? Thank you!
Hi Brigina,
Sorry for the late reply – I have been away on vacation. I haven’t heard any other reports of pixelated images and I haven’t experienced it myself. What size are the images you are using? Are they properly formatted to fit inside the glossary?
Drop me an email through the contact page if you still are experiencing this issue.
Sincerely,
Michael
Hi Michael,
Thanks for the response. I sized the widget down on the slide, and that helped. But now I have a different problem. None of my links work in the published version. I tried saving the Web pages to my Assets folder, but they still don’t work. What am I missing? Thanks for your help!
Sorry, I felt the need to clarify. For some terms (mostly companies) I have a link to the main Web page, like http://www.fuelrewards.com. The links work in preview mode, but not in the published version. The cursor changes to a hand to indicate it’s an active link, but nothing happens when you click it. Thanks again for any help you can offer!
Hi Michael,
I guess I’m your problem child. : ) So, when I view the published file, it all works fine (with the exception of the hyperlinks). But other users can’t see anything on the slide when they open the .htm or .swf files.
My XML path is C:\Backup Files\Projects\New Hire Training\General\Glossary\xml_files\, and the location of my images/assets is C:\Backup Files\Projects\New Hire Training\General\Glossary\Images\For_Glossary\. I assume that’s the problem – that users can’t access my local files, so nothing shows up. But, if I clear those fields, the widget doesn’t work for me at all. I don’t have a server to put things on or link to. Would you please tell me what I should do to fix this? Thank you!
